100,000th TREE PLANTED!!!

The Morgan county tree planting board, which began counting planted trees in 2006 has recently surpassed 100,000. Tree 100,000 - A giant stepIn appreciation of planting number 100,000, a “thank you oak” was given to Morgan county landowner Bobby Barnes. He coordinated with NewPage Corporation to plant 4,000 loblolly’s on his property in April.

The oak is descended from acorns that were delivered as part of a shipment of goods received from France after WWII. The goods, which came on a railroad car, were France’s way of expressing gratitude to the United States. The acorns were planted at the West Virginia Division of Forestry Clements nursery years ago.

Although inactive, the tree planting board is continuing to count trees. To report your planted tree, click here or call the Inwood forestry office at (304)229-2665.
